There are many choices here, all serving different purposes.
http://www.knoppix.org/ was one of the first ones.
http://damnsmalllinux.org/ is a small one made to fit on a business card CD.
http://www.puppylinux.org is another small Linux live cd
http://www.inside-security.de/insert_en.html is a small live cd with sercurity/forensics tools
http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page is a small live cd for system rescue
Many of the “main” linux distributions are using live cds to install , so you can try before you actually install.
http://www.ubuntu.com/ – there are many variants, kubuntu, edubuntu, ebuntu, fluxbuntu, etc.
http://www.thinkgos.com/ is an ubuntu variant that isused on the “$200 Walmart system”
